Born in Washington, D.C., currently residing in Los Angeles, and living no less than a dozen places in between, nif considers ideas on phenomenology, time, memory and a ‘sense of place’ through drawing, printmaking, binding structures, and words.  She received her MFA from San Francisco State University, is a recipient of the Murphy, Cadogan & Phelan Fellowship, and is an artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.  She publishes artists books, ephemera, and collaborations under the imprint Subtext Press, to examine how we perceive space, duration, what may be overlooked, and what doesn’t need to be said.

David Avery continues to exploit the constraints inherent in traditional black and white line etching in his studio in San Francisco for his own suspect purposes. His work is included in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, the New York Public Library, the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, the Stanford University Library among others, and has been noted in the New York Times. Originally trained as a classical musician, he discovered etching almost by accident in a class at the local community college. After learning the basic techniques, he intently pursued his own course of discovery, developing an exceptional technique and creating a remarkable body of finely wrought miniature etchings and drypoints. Even though “black and white doesn’t sell”, he has eschewed the use of color, finding the subtleties and tonalities of black and white most capable of creating the psychological mood that allows his work to be effective.
Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, creativity was part of everyday life.  I have vivid  memories of asking my father to draw Mickey Mouse, or another Disney character--or anything else at all.  He was a natural artist albeit a colorblind one.  I like to think that I inherited my artistic talent from him.  Throughout childhood I was always drawing pictures, coloring, or making paper dolls.  In elementary school, my favorite assignments were the ones that included creating illustrations.  High school art introduced me to a wide array of processes: silk screen, linoleum printmaking, soap carving and copper enameling in addition to the usual drawing and painting.   In college I took classes in etching and ceramics but it was woodblock printing that captured my attention and the media to which I have devoted my talents.I am fortunate to have been able to combine my printmaking skills with an interest in costumes and textiles.  A graduate degree in European costume history combined with museum experience in non-western clothing provided me a worldwide view of the history of dress.  Recent travel to Japan has influenced my most recent prints.
Tallmadge Doyle is a printmaker, painter and public artist. Born in New York City, she has lived and worked in Eugene, Oregon, for twenty-­five years.She received her BFA in Drawing from the Cleveland Art Institute and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Oregon.Recent exhibitions include one person shows at Davidson Gallery, Seattle; Augen Gallery, Portland; and Schrager Clarke Gallery in Eugene. Her work is included in more than one hundred national and international exhibitions and is featured in over forty public collections in the United States and abroad.Tallmadge taught as an Adjunct Professor of printmaking and drawing at the University of Oregon for 15 years and teaches annual workshops at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.
